Miss Claire One Stroke Nail Polish

Heyyy Girls!!!
I'm off to Dubai to hit the malls and take a mini vacation all together. As part of my grooming before I travel abroad routine I cut my hair shorter, dyed it darker and shopped for plenty of last minute things that a girl just cannot do without. I also bought these nail paints which I will be reviewing today as my last post of the month before I fly off to holidayyy!!

Reviewing today, Miss Claire One Stroke Nail Polish.

Since Miss Claire is a Korean brand that is locally manufactured in my city, I was not able to find a webpage or any other information of this company online. You can see the pictures closely for what little info has been made available on the bottles. The price of this nail paint is given as INR 225 on the bottle. However, I bought it for a measly INR 175 each. The quantity in each bottle is 15 ml. Miss Claire nail polish comes in a glass bottle with an easy application flat brush that can cover you nail with the polish in one easy stroke. The packaging looks classy and almost too similar to O.P.I nail paints.

Now let me tell you how exactly I came across these nail paints. I had popped into a store in my neighbourhood that keeps all sorts of imported self care products. I had picked my regular Maybelline 40 second nail varnishes when a SA stepped into request me to try these nail paints. She demonstrated the tomato red shade that I'm wearing in the picture below on herself and added that these varnishes would not cause dis-colouration of my nails even if I wear them for long periods of time. Also the nail paint applied swiftly in an easy stroke and seemed to have great color pigments which made it look like she was wearing a double coat. Needless to say, I was sold and opted for these over the Maybelline's.

Application :
Apply as you would any nail paint. Starting from the centre of the nail and then sweeping over the corners. Let  your nails air dry for about 5 minutes and your good to go.

Pro's of Miss Claire One Stroke Nail Polish :

  • Great looking polish bottle with an easy to use brush
  • Nail paints with an extensive range to choose from. Almost every color you can imagine on your nails!
  • The nail paints have bright color pigments reducing the need of a second coat
  • According to the claims of the SA which I still have to test, the formula of this nail paint will prevent the dis-colouration of your nails
  • Affordable price for the quantity of paints in each bottle
  • Dries in approximately 5 minutes which is okay waiting time for me
Cons of Miss Claire One Stroke Nail Polish :
  • Less to do with the product and more with the brand but I sincerely wish that Miss Claire would at least have a page online and market themselves better
To Splurge or Not to Splurge :
All the nail art aficionados who are always on the lookout for different and hard to find nail paints, please check out which store stocks these lovelies in your city. I'm definitely going to buy them in as many colors as I like. They even have 3 different types of red's! And don't even get me started on the pink's!! I will try and get a shot of the entire range next time I visit the store and post it up here.

Final Verdict :
Miss Claire One Stroke Nail Polish gets a 4/5 from me!

Revlon Lip & Eye Make Up Remover

Heyyy Girls!!!
Running a make up review blog is no mean task. One always has to be on the look out for good products, new launches and good deals. Also, I need lots of make up remover and I keep buying and trying new ones to find out which ones are worth your buy and which aren't. Today's review is one such purchase.

Reviewing today, Revlon Lip & Eye Make Up Remover.

Revlon says :
"This creamy make up remover lifts away all kinds of make up including long wearing & transfer resistant make up. Leaves skin comfortably soft and free of residue. Non-irritating, ophthalmologist tested. Won't cause breakouts."

Price : INR 160

Quantity : 60 ml.

Available at : All Revlon kiosks at leading departmental stores

Revlon Lip & Eye Make Up Remover comes in a white plastic tube with a black flip top. It looks pretty plain and basic but do not mistake its abilities with its dull, almost boring looks. The remover is a white cream that spreads easily over your face and removes make up with a swipe without the need for rubbing repeatedly. The remover has no fragrance as such and does not leave any residue on your skin post use.
Revlon Eye & Lip Make Up Remover on washcloth

Application :
Take a generous quantity of the make up remover on a cotton pad or wash cloth. Gently spread over the make up you want to remove. Wipe off softly to get clean, fresh skin.

Spread Revlon Lip & Eye Make Up Remover over the make up swatches
Skin is perfectly clean and fresh!

Pro's of Revlon Lip & Eye Make Up Remover :

  • Inexpensive
  • Fragrance free, this make up remover spreads easily over the skin
  • Removes even water proof and long wear make up with a quick, gentle swipe
  • Is safe on your skin and eyes and suitable for the sensitive
Cons of Revlon Lip & Eye Make Up Remover :
  • Plain looking packaging
  • I always need to use tons of this cream make up remover to get rid of my make up and end up running out of it pretty soon. It's not a con per se, maybe its just me and my excessive ways but still its the only complaint I have of this product.
To Splurge or Not to Splurge :
A cheap, effective and gentle make up remover that does its job without any frills. I will certainly go back to this make up remover whenever I run out of new options to try. Also, always remember to cleanse your skin with a cleanser after removing your make up to thoroughly clean your skin and prevent the risk of acne.

Final Verdict :
Revlon Lip & Eye Make Up Remover gets a 4/5 from me!

  • Amazing fragrance. I love love love it!! And you will too if your into citrus
  • Very gently exfoliates your skin and suitable for sensitive skin as an exfoliator
  • Leaves skin soft and gives it an instant radiance
  • Cleans skin without stripping it of natural oils
Cons of The Body Shop Vitamin C Facial Cleansing Polish :

  • Expensive for the quantity
  • Leaves a thin film of smoothing product or something which may cause breakouts in acne prone skin
To Splurge or Not to Splurge :
The Body Shop Vitamin C Facial Cleansing Polish is just like its name a cleansing polish that gives you an immediate radiant effect, thanks to the generous dose of Vitamin C in it. This cleanser gently exfoliates with its micro beads but is still not harsh on your skin. I'm a little concerned about the slight film it leaves on my skin but no doubt I enjoy the smooth and radiant skin I get after using it. I will continue using and buying this Cleansing Polish as long as it pampers my skin like this.

Radiant and smooth skin after using TBS Vitamin C Facial Cleansing Polish
Final Verdict :

Maybelline Dream Matte Mousse Foundation

Heyyy Girls!!!
Today's review is for a fabulous mousse foundation I helped my sister buy as her HG foundation. Reviewing today, Maybelline Dream Matte Mousse Foundation.

Maybelline says :
"Why You’ll Love It
  • Revolutionary whipped formula provides an air – soft, perfect matte finish coverage, with a weightless feel.
  • Color pigments offer superior coverage.
  • Blends effortlessly for a soft, natural – looking, even – toned result."

Price : INR 525

Quantity : 18 gms.

Available at : All Maybelline kiosks at leading departmental stores

The mousse foundation comes in a glass pot with a caramel color cap. The mousse foundation has a light texture and applies easily giving medium coverage. I applied it for sis with my fingers but you could also use a make-up sponge. The foundation has a mild, calamine lotion like fragrance which both me and sis loved. The foundation leaves the skin super soft and smooth, feeling like satin and least to say, my sister was thrilled!

Application :
Start by applying foundation down the center of your face first.Use just a small amount and blend it in thoroughly.Layer more if necessary to achieve the coverage you want.

Pro's of Maybelline Dream Matte Mousse Foundation :
  • Efficient pricing
  • You need a tiny bit of the souffle foundation at each application and thus this product will last for a very long time
  • Gives medium coverage without the need of a powder to set your foundation
  • Applies easily, even with your fingers and spreads well
  • Leaves skin soft and smooth to touch
Cons of Maybelline Dream Matte Mousse Foundation :
  • Souffle foundation though light in texture settles deep in your pores and makes it necessary to use a make up remover or cleansing milk to take off the foundation
To Splurge or Not to Splurge :
Maybelline Dream Matte Foundation is a fantastic souffle foundation which I would recommend for the first time users or rare make-up wearers. It's a cheaper alternative to L'Oreal Matte Morphose foundation but does a similar job. Great for those who want medium coverage and a non-fussy make up base option.

Final Verdict :
Maybelline Dream Matte Mousse Foundation gets a 4/5 from me!

L'Oreal Density Advanced Shampoo Review

Heyyy Girls!!!
A dear one was recently visiting me from the U.S and boy, did staying away from home take a toll on her! The extreme climate conditions (read : cold), poor eating habits and pressures of leading a professional life had affected the health of her hair. Faced with acute hair fall, we decided to take her to a salon for some professional intervention. My mother has always told me that when your hair suddenly starts shedding at an alarming rate, its time to get a trim. Scientifically speaking, once the hair reaches its resting phase or the Telogen phase it stays there for upto 6 weeks. This is when you may experience unprecedented hair fall.

While my loved one was diagnosed with a flaky scalp which added to her hair loss woes, she was also recommended today's product to deal with and provide some much needed nutrition to her starved roots. She went through treatments for clearing her scalp and has reported some success after using this product.

Reviewing today, L'Oreal Density Advanced Shampoo.
L'Oreal says :
"A volumizing shampoo for enhancing density & taming locks. Contains vitamins B6, PP & Omega 6 acids. Moderately cleanses hair cuticles to strengthen body & shine. Covers hair strands in rich lipids to increase diameter & refine texture. Leaves hair supremely supple & under control with improved volume."

Price : INR 535 (approximately)

Quantity : 250 ml.

Available at : All L'Oreal salons and stockists

Density Advanced shampoo comes in a regular L'Oreal Professionel shampoo bottle with a white body and silver flip cap. The shampoo is a clear liquid with a runny texture. It has a medicinal fragrance thanks to the many vitamin ingredients present in it.

Application :
Wet your hair. Massage a coin size quantity onto your scalp and work through hair. Rinse and repeat as desired.

Pro's of L'Oreal Density Advanced Shampoo :

  • Gentle shampoo that cleanses mildly and feeds your scalp with a generous dose of Vitamins and Omega 6 which is proven to be food for hair
  • Increases the volume of hair creating the illusion of thicker hair
  • Hair is soft, easy to tame and shiny with regular use
Cons of L'Oreal Density Advanced Shampoo :
  • Pricey, but then its a salon exclusive product
  • Does not thoroughly clean the scalp, making it unsuitable for oily scalps
  • Does not create much lather
To Splurge or Not to Splurge :
L'Oreal Density Advanced shampoo is a treatment shampoo which you must try if you are suffering from sudden, unexplained hair loss. L'Oreal also offers an in-salon treatment called, Aminexil which provides nutrients and stimulates root activity for thinning hair. From what I've learned, using this shampoo in conjunction with the in-salon treatment can help re-grow hair unless the loss is hereditary, hormonal, due to illness or any medication. However, since I am thankfully facing no such hair loss issue, I can't really comment on its effectiveness or give it any sort of rating.

The Body Shop Wild Cherry Lip Butter

Heyyy Girls!!!
Today's review is the messiah for all our dry, chapped lip issues. It featured in my Best of 2011 list as my favourite lip balm, the only product I carry everywhere on me and features prominently on my bed stand.

Reviewing today, The Body Shop's Wild Cherry Lip Butter.

The Body Shop says :
"Best if you want to: Keep lips kissably soft with a rich, moisturizing lip butter with mouthwatering wild cherry.
Best for: normal to dry skin
How it works:
  • Its creamy butter-like texture melts onto the lips to help prevent dryness, leaving them feeling soft, smooth and kissable.
  • Cherry oil has excellent moisturization properties, is rich in vitamins A and E, and contains natural antioxidants.
  • Community Trade shea butter leaves skin soft, smooth and supple.
  • Community Trade organic beeswax is a skin conditioner that also keeps the product texture consistent over time."

Price : INR 255

Quantity : 10 ml.

Available at : TBS outlets worldwide

TBS Wild Cherry Lip Butter comes in a cute little red pot where the lid unscrews open and you can dip your pinky finger inside to access the lip butter. It's absolutely not the best packaging idea for those finicky about hygiene (me! me!) and hence this time I've opted for a roll-on lip balm from TBS in place of this lip butter. The lip butter, just like its name has a butter like texture and appearance and glides on with ease over lips. The fragrance of the lip butter is just like Cherry's, one of my favourite fruit, and makes me salivate with its juicy and slightly tangy aroma.

Application :
Use as desired to keep lips soft and conditioned. Can also be dabbed over matte lipsticks for a glossy look.
Lips with TBS Wild Cherry Lip Butter

TBS Wild Cherry Lip Butter applied over matte lipstick

Pro's of The Body Shop Wild Cherry Lip Butter :
  • Affordable Price for the quantity of product
  • A little butter does a whole lot so it lasted me for a very long time
  • Makes lips buttery soft and smell yummy
  • Works well on chapped lips too
  • Doubles up as a gloss for my matte lipsticks and takes care to keep the color from bleeding into lip lines
Cons of The Body Shop Wild Cherry Lip Butter :
  • Contrary to TBS's claim that beeswax maintains the texture of this balm over time, I would suggest you keep your tub away from heat to prevent the lip butter from getting totally mushy. I left it in my car, inside my handbag one hot Mumbai noon and had to stick it in the deep freezer as soon as I reached home
  • The finger-in-tub application is germ friendly and hence a huge con for me
To Splurge or Not to Splurge :
The Body Shop Wild Cherry Lip Butter is an amazing lip butter to keep winter's atrocities on the most delicate piece of skin on your body, your lips, at bay. It also soothes and heals chapped lips and protects them. I dab on tons of this every morning and and even more at night before I hit the sack. However, I have not re-purchased it because of the huge con I've mentioned above.

Final Verdict :
The Body Shop Wild Cherry Lip Butter gets a 3.5/5 from me!

Lush Caca Noir Henna Review

Heyyy Girls!!!
I am a hugeee fan of changing the color of my hair and as all of you must have read and re-read in several of my previous posts, its taken a severe toll on the health and condition of my hair. Inspite of the knowledge and awareness of the extent to which the chemical dyes can harm both my hair and over all well being, I continued to use them frequently (3-4 times/year).
Last year in the month of June, I got some highlights done in my hair. But having gotten bored of them pretty soon (within 3 months) I again decided to go for a global hair color to cover up and slightly tone down the honey and caramel highlights. After spending a bomb on coloring, lightening then darkening my hair multiple times, I still wasn't happy with the color and mostly the fragile condition my hair was left in. That's when I got myself re-introduced to the healthy and ancient way of coloring my hair. Yes, I'm talking about Henna or 'mehendi' as it is better known in the Indian sub-continent.
(from top to bottom) Henna leaf, henna powder, women decorating feet with henna and henna designs on hand

First a little background information for the unaware on the tradition of using henna to dye skin and hair :

Henna is a flowering plant used since antiquity to dye skin, hair, fingernails, leather and wool. Henna has been used since the Bronze Age to dye body and hair. In several parts of the world it is used as part of various celebrations and festivals. Henna finds a mention in Indian court records as a hair dye around 400 CE., in Rome during the Roman Empire and in Spain during Convivencia. It has been used as a hair dye for nearly 6000 years. In ancient Egypt, Queens Cleopatra and Nefertiti were known to use it. It was and is still popularly used in many parts of Asia, Middle East and Africa.
Egyptian Queen Cleopatra
Egyptian Queen Nefertiti

Mughal Empress Mumtaz wife of Emperor Shahjahan also used henna to dye her hair and skin

Commercially packaged henna, intended for use as a cosmetic hair dye, is available in many countries, and is now popular in India, as well as the Middle East, Europe, Australia, Canada and the United States. The colour that results from dying with henna can fall into a broad spectrum, from auburn, to orange, to deep burgundy, chestnut brown or deep blue-black. To achieve a colour that is more brown or black, the user must use indigo hair dye as well as henna. Henna's coloring properties are due to lawsone, a burgundy organic compound that has an affinity for bonding with protein. Lawsone is primarily concentrated in the leaves.
Woman's body decorated with henna tattoos and designs
This was not my first brush with henna. As the excerpt above, taken courtesy Wikipedia, tells how using henna to dye hair and skin is a traditional practise in India and hence I have seen several female members of my family use henna to naturally color and condition their hair. Henna is known for its conditioning and anti-fungal properties making it good for both your hair and scalp. Also, the color from henna coats your hair fibre and protects it from sun damage. Reasons enough to treat yourself to all natural henna! But please note, like any other hair dye, you need to do an allergy test atleast 24 hours before using henna for the first time. Also, if you plan to use chemical hair dyes or go under any other chemical hair procedure post using henna, I would not recommend you to try this as henna will not allow the chemical to both color or chemically alter your hair. Henna is also known to remove the effects of chemically straightened or permed hair so if you have undergone any, please stay away from it. Getting rid of henna from your hair is extremely difficult. Some stylist claim to be able to do it using mineral oil but from what I know, once the color coats your hair it will only leaves your head once you chop your hair.

Getting back to Lush Caca NoirLush says :
"Pure Persian henna mixed with Indian indigo for blue-black tints. It is an ancient Indian tradition to mix red henna with powder from the dried, fermented indigo root, to give dark hair deep blue glints. Indigo is not cheap, so there are some synthetic 'black hennas' around, but we want you to stay away from those! Lush Caca Noir is red henna with indigo powder, clove oil scent and Irish moss seaweed for softness. Cover it with Clingfilm and keep it damp for a redder colour, or let it air dry for a black/blue tint. Pick up any bits which fall on the floor or it'll dye the rugs, too."
Lush Caca Noir Henna block

Price : INR 970

Quantity : 1 block containing 6 squares (see picture above)

Available at : All Lush outlets worldwide

Since I wanted to go darker and even cover some of the old highlights in my hair, I bought the Caca Noir which is meant for jet black hair. There are three other colors of Caca you can choose from : Rouge (for very red hair), Marron (for chestnut brown hair with red highlights) and Brun (for shiny brown hair). I have previously used Caca Rouge and Marron to color my hair. While Marron was my favoured color (I have used it more than thrice in the past) and gave me glossy brownish-red hair in the sun, Rouge was too loud and when in the sun, looked like my-hairs-on-fire-red. You may have noticed that I keep referring to what color my hair was while in the sun and its only because the true colors and hues of the henna hair dye are best seen outdoors in day time. Indoors or under artificial lighting your hair will at most look tinted and glossy.

Lush Caca's come in solid block form and are infused with several other natural ingredients like cloves, coffee, seaweed etc. that nourish your hair while coloring it. It also has cocoa butter as the main ingredient which helps in binding and keeping the henna together in a solid form. Hence, you need to be careful to store your henna in a cool, dry place away from heat. The henna has a grainy texture and an earthy, moss like smell. I neither detest nor enjoy this fragrance but if you have a sensitivity to fragrances you will certainly not enjoy this one. The henna blocks break easily and leave a mess like dry dirt so its best if you do all this keeping it on an old plate or newspaper sheets.

Application :
1. Cut henna up into small pieces and put in a heatproof bowl.
2. Add hot water and let steep. Mix to a yogurt-like consistency.
3. Put on gloves and apply from back to front, coating hair thoroughly.
4. Cover in cling wrap for a more vibrant red. Leave on for one to six hours.
5. Rinse, shampoo, and condition hair.
Tips: Always do a strand test first. Use face cream or Vaseline around your hairline and ears to protect skin. Wrap hair in cling film for a redder color. For darker, richer colors, leave on longer (up to six hours).

My henna concotion with egg yolks and sweet almond oil
Many other websites and review posts emphasise the need to grind/grate the henna to powder like consistency and tell you not to soak the henna in hot or boiling water to get best results. Let me tell you that these are all myths and methods to complicate the simple method which I have created to get the best results out of Lush Caca's. I simply boil water and let the Caca blocks (I need two for below shoulder length, fine hair) sit in it overnight. Next morning I add any of the conditioning foods I may have in my kitchen e.g. curd, egg, mayo, beer etc. I also squeeze in some lime to detox my scalp and for added shine. Post soaking overnight, the Cacas easily crumble into powder and can be mixed well to a yoghurt like consistency. If you want more of a reddish tone, you can add some cheap red wine (I use port wine) to get the deeper red color. Application can be super messy and I would advise you to take it to your bathroom. I don't spread out newspapers on the floor but keep some water running in a tub to wash away any stray henna which falls down. I use the dish washing gloves from Scotch-Brite to apply henna on to my hair and start with sections on the top of my head working my way downwards. Normally when trying for a deep red color, I would cover my hair with cling film or silver foil and a shower cap on top to generate some heat but with Caca Noir I just piled my hair on the top of my head with a cloth scrunchie and left it open. There will be some henna bits falling off, like tiny dirt particles, so its best to avoid sitting on a fancy couch or resting on any expensive bedspreads. I periodically dust them off my clothes in the shower to avoid messing up my house. I prefer to keep my henna on for about 4 hours and keep myself busy online, reading, playing with my son or just watching old sitcom re-runs. If you enjoy a nap, go ahead and take one because being cooped at home with goop on your head can certainly drive anyone crazy!

Henna paste
I rinse my henna sitting under a running faucet with lukewarm water. Suggest you massage your head slowly to dissolve the hardened henna and get any lumpy bits out easily. Once the water runs clean, shampoo your hair twice and follow it up with conditioning. Make sure to get the conditioner till your scalp for once, to clear out any stuck bits of henna. Rinse off with cool water after 5 minutes. Towel dry and let your hair air dry. Congratulations! You have just successfully hennaed your hair all by yourself! Enjoy your all natural, healthy new hair color and the compliments that will be coming your way.
Tip : It may take upto 72 hours for the color from your henna to oxidise and start showing up more so be patient. To build up the color's depth, Lush suggests that you use it thrice on consecutive days and then once every 4-6 weeks to maintain the radiance of the color. I personally prefer to oil my hair overnight before I wash my freshly hennaed hair first time for deep conditioning and to help the color settle well into the hair fibre.

Pictures of my hair after first time use of Caca Noir

Hair with dark brown and red color post first application of Caca Noir

Cons of Lush Caca Noir Henna :

  • Expensive
  • Can be very messy to handle and store
  • Can be very messy to apply unless you carefully follow instructions above
  • Needs a long time to develop (4-6 hours)
  • The henna fragrance can be intolerable for some
  • Needs to be applied three times to get the desired color to show
To Splurge or Not to Splurge :
If you love your hair dearly and run away at the mere mention of chemicals but would still want to color your hair, then Lush Caca's are my best recommendation for you. Subtle yet beautiful color with loads of shine and healthy, soft hair are the results of this wonderful product. Be prepared to face a mess and give in lots of time, dedication and cleaning hours post using this but honestly, one look into the mirror and I would do it all again! I loved Lush Cacas and will continue using them to maintain the glossy, soft hair days as long as I can.

Hair shines intensely after second application of Caca Noir
Hair is darker in color after second application as compared to the first use

Final Verdict :
Lush Caca Noir gets a 4.5/5 from me!

I bought these lipsticks nearly two years back. Not to creep you guys out for still having and using cosmetics this old, I just didn't have the heart to throw these out because of the steep price and gorgeous shades which I've been struggling to buy again. Hence, I decided to review and talk about these lippies before I run out of them forever.

The lipsticks come in customised colors with the star's (for whom it has been created) signature on the tube. The outer tube is black in color with a golden font and inner body. The lipsticks are loaded with shimmer and have the typical L'Oreal lipstick smell which I've come to love after using these for so long. The texture of the lipstick is super smooth and applies easily.

Cons of L'Oreal Color Riche Star Secrets Lipstick :

  • Expensive for a drugstore brand like L'Oreal
  • Does not last for more than 2 hours and needs touch up's through the day
  • The Aishwarya Rai looks like a pink-brown in the commercials while actually its just a nude-brown with lots of glitter
  • Not your lipsticks if you dislike glitter
Aishwarya's Beige 725

To Splurge or Not to Splurge :
I would love to splurge repeatedly on the Penelope Red but the Aishwarya Beige was a dissapointment. However, I have hardly any nude lippies in my collection and this comes handy when I want to create a nude mouth with heavy eye make up. I love the way these lipsticks glide on lips, super smooth with a soft finish. Also, love the glitter particles in both the lipsticks. Buy these if you are a L'Oreal lipstick fan and idolise any of the several celebs who have their customised shades up for grabs.

Final Verdict :
L'Oreal Color Riche Star Secrets Lipstick gets a 4/5 from me!
