The Best of 2011 (part 2)

Heyyy Girls!!!
Getting back to the countdown we are doing on Girl's World for the Best products and trends of 2011, before we start the countdown for the arrival of the new year.

13. Best Eye shadow
Eye shadow is a must have for every girl. It's a cosmetic which features on the daily use list of some while others, like me, stick to it for only special events. What I look for in an eye shadow is a soft, blend able powder with rich color pigments and lots of shimmer to highlight my eyes. Maybelline Diamond Glow Eyeshadow Quad has all this and more. The wide range of shades in the quads to choose from, also this shadow gives me up to 5 hour long wear with no flaking. The diamond like shimmer particles which are present in this eye shadow are just perfect for a shimmer crazy girl like me! With step by step application illustrated on the palette, creating your customised smoky eye just got easier.

14. Best Face Scrub Exfoliator
Exfoliating your skin on a weekly basis is the key to fresh, youthful looking skin. Prior to using our Best Scrub of 2011, I had tried and stuck to the popular walnut/apricot scrubs which are easily available and popular in India. When Lotus Herbals launched their White Glow line of fairness products, I grabbed three of the many products on offer. Two of them were major disappointments. But the third was the Lotus Herbals White Glow Oatmeal & Yoghurt Scrub. Its a white color scrub with a herbs like fragrance, micro particles of oatmeal that gently exfoliate skin to remove dead cells, dis-colouration, dirt, black and white heads etc. Post using this scrub, my skin is left looking clear, bright and super soft. With this scrub I finally moved out of my comfort zone of sticking to conventional exfoliators and found a more efficient yet gentle exfoliator in oatmeal.

15. Best Body Moisturising Lotion/Cream
Using a body lotion to moisturise and protect your skin through the day is very important. The best time to use  a body lotion is post your bath while your skin is still moist and maximum absorption of the moisturiser is possible. After trying many brands of departmental and pricey body lotions, I found the one that was perfect for a picky girl like me. I like my body moisturiser to have a) Great Smell and b) Even greater moisturising qualities. Garnier Body Cocoon was the perfect body lotion for me this year because it's instantly absorbed into the skin and keeps the skin moisturised and fragrant for hours after. In this age of central air conditioning, dry skin has become a common problem. Here's the good news, after using this body cream I've spent up to 8 hours in air conditioned environment yet there was no tell tale signs of dryness, skin tightness, white lines when scratched etc. And this is how Garnier Body Cocoon became the chosen body lotion/cream for me to cocoon myself in 2011.

16. Best Body Spray/ Deo
I'm a self confessed gym/fitness freak who sweats out daily with almost religious dedication. And for me to have a body spray or deo that gives me the protection I need from body odour and sweaty underarms is very important. In the last four years since I have been into physical fitness, I have tried and re-tried many body deo's. But the protection and fragrance of Dove deodorant is something I have come to trust and bank on. My favourite in their range of deo's is the Clear Touch body spray which leaves your underarms soft and fresh all day long while their 1/4 moisturising cream cares for your skin. All this and no white marks on your skin or clothes. Flaunting great smelling and pretty looking under arms is now my prerogative!

17. Best Shampoo
Coloring and using heat on my hair is the reason I had to seek a shampoo that can take care and maybe reverse some of the damage I have inflicted on it. A repairing or damage care shampoo was my go to hair care product this year. L'Oreal re-vamped and re-launched their popular Absolut Repair home care hair line this year and that was the solution to all my repairing needs. Like its name, this shampoo with its ingredients like Lactic Acid, helps in re-binding the broken keratin links in damaged hair. The results of this shampoo are so good that I would personally endorse it for those girl's who have damaged hair but don't have the heart to cut it all yet. All though I like to keep trying and shuttling between different shampoos as they are a weakness for me, L'Oreal Professionel's Absolut Repair Cellular Shampoo was without a doubt the best shampoo I have used this year.

18. Best Conditioner
Like a repairing shampoo was my need this year, so was a repairing conditioner. But since I like to try different products, from different hair care lines together to create my own combinations, I paired my best shampoo of this year with TIGI's Urban Anti-Dotes Resurrection Conditioner. This conditioner has great resurrection qualities and moisturises hair while concentrating on the dry, damaged parts. With an awesome strawberry smell and attractive packaging I enjoyed using this conditioner very much and think its one of the finest products from the house of Toni and Guy.

19. Best Hair Mask
Dove Nourishing Oil Care line of hair products were launched this year and created quiet a storm in the Indian market. Dove claims that it is one of the most recommended hair product brand among Indian women. I would definitely agree. I have on several occasions recommended Dove hair care products to some of my girl pals and always received positive feed back from them. Dove, with its great quality products at affordable prices is exactly what makes it so popular. The best hair mask of this year was Dove's Nourishing Oil Care Weekly Repair Mask. The care of oil in a hair mask was what had me sold to this product. That Indian's are fond of religiously using hair oil to condition and tame their hair is well known across the world. This hair mask not only gives your hair the goodness of hair oils but also repairs damage hair making it smooth and naturally shiny. Don't fret if you don't enjoy oiling your hair or have no time to, use this hair mask and give it the benefit of oiling through a mask.

20. Best Hair Serum/Spray
The hair serum of the year 2011 also comes from the Dove Nourishing Oil Care line. While I stick to professional hair products while using heat on my hair for protection and enhanced shine, the daily use hair care serum that I use post a hair wash is the Dove Nourishing Oil Care Serum. This serum is instantly absorbed in to the hair leaving it shiny, smooth and nourished. It increases hair manageability without any greasiness or heaviness. This serum has an affordable price but does the work of salon exclusive hair care products. It truly deserves to be the Best Hair Serum of 2011.

21. Best Nail Enamel/Paint
Definitely, Maybelline Nail Enamels. With a wide range of nail paint colors and formulas to choose from, Maybelline was the only nail paint I have purchased and re-purchased through the year. Their nail paints have great color pigments and apply well. The brush provided with each nail paint bottle is perfect for applying nail paint without messing it up. At affordable prices, Maybelline is indulging every girl's nail art dreams and is the perfect recipient for the Best Nail Enamel of 2011.

22. Best Lip Balm
Lip balm is one beauty product every girl must have on herself, at all times. Our lips have only three to five cellular layers as compared to the skin on our face which has sixteen layers, making it very delicate and more prone to dryness. The Body Shop's Wild Cherry Lip Butter is my Best Lip Balm of 2011 because it keeps lips soft with rich lip butters, cherry oil, shea butter and organic beeswax. With the goodness of anti-oxidant and Vitamin A & E, this lip butter helps prevent lips from drying. The yummy cherry aroma of this lip butter makes me want to eat it! Girl's, the only drawback is using this lip butter may cause your popularity in the opposite sex to proliferate, thanks to the luscious and delicious smelling lips you'll get by using this one.

23. Best Fashion Trend
Fashion trends change with every season. However, one trend was seen all over the place through the year, The fashion magazines hailed it, the critics also acknowledged it, the celebrities flaunted it and girl's like you and me rejoiced! Colorblocking was first seen in the spring 2011 collections on runways across the world. Strategically placed, contrasting, yet complimentary, bold and bright colors paired together to create a unique look is what colorblocking is all about. If you are trying to break away from safe, neutral colors like black, white, brown, navy, grey and beige in your wardrobe choices, let me guide you where to start from. Chose a bold or neon color and take it back to one of these neutrals for baby steps into this colorblocking trend. Here are a few ideas and color combinations to de-code the 'Now' trend of the year :

  • Cobalt BlueYellowOrange
  • Chocolate BrownPink, Peach
  • PurpleBright Blue, Teal
  • Deep bluebright pink, White
  • Coral, Grey, Ivory

If you are apprehensive to go all out when colorblocking your clothes, you can try the black-white combination which offers a modern look with as much fun. You can leave the drama of  creating color on your accessories. Colorblocking is a big favourite of mine because its just made for the Indian figure. Colorblocking is all about playing up and down your curves. The trick is to choose a neutral color for the parts of your body you want to downplay and the bolder colors for what you want to flaunt and accentuate. Another way to introduce bold pops of color into your dressing is through your accessories. Shoes, handbags, jewellery play a big part when colorblocking your accessories. So girls, what are you waiting for? It's still not too late to take the world over, by a color storm, this new years eve!

Hope you have enjoyed reading this post as much as I have enjoyed compiling it for you :-D
Cheers!!

The Best of 2011 (part 1)

Heyyy Girls!!!
An entire years's gone by and as we celebrate the arrival of the new year, I want to take a moment down memories lane and get nostalgic about all the wonderful products and trends I have discovered and turned to all of this year.

Presenting Girl's World's Best of 2011!!

1. Best Lipstick
My love for lipsticks is pretty evident on this page. I feel every woman should have that go-to shade of lipstick which makes her feel and look beautiful no matter what and how. Bourjois Sweet Kiss lipstick in Fuchsia Cosmoplite 80 was my lipstick for this year. I wore it to parties, wedding, casual/formal dinners, movies. In short, I wore it everywhere! With the goodness of Argan Oil, Vitamin C & E, this lipstick cares for your lips, for up to 8 hours. And even though this year is over, I'm hoping that my best lipstick of the year 2011 will give me Sweet Kissable Lips even in the years to come.

2. Best Lipgloss
Lipgloss is always what comes to my mind after a lipstick. I love to dress up my lips in the brightest, boldest colors because I believe every girl's lips are the sexiest feature on her face. The best lipgloss of the year had to be the new launch by Revlon. The New Colorburst Lipgloss. It gives your lips the shine of a gloss with the color of a lipstick. Plus it cares for your lips with Sweet Almond Oil and Vitamin E. Reason enough to pick it as the Best Lipgloss of the year and let your lips do the talking!

3. Best Foundation
This was a really tough one. I've had the good fortune of chancing upon not one but three great foundations this year. But the best had to be zeroed upon and what a feeling to announce that the very first product I reviewed on this blog, gets to walk away with the top honour. Yes, L'Oreal Matte Morphose foundation is the Best Foundation of 2011! With a souffle texture that blends like a dream and transforms your skin right beneath your fingers as you apply it... Enough said! Also, this foundation erases fine lines and banishes visible pores away, giving you skin that looks and feels like a dream. I chose to pick Matte Morphose foundation as the Best of this year because I've got most compliments myself, when wearing this.

4. Best Compact Powder
After believing that only high end brands make the best pressed powder for combination skin types, like me, I came across Bourjois Compact Powder. I love this compact because it sets my make up perfectly, conceals pores and eliminates the need to powder my nose repeatedly when I'm out. Even after a crazy night of partying, when I see myself in the mirror, I like it! The pinkish tone of this powder doesn't leave you looking jaundiced or too made up like some other expensive make up brands do. And hence, the Best Compact Powder of the year 2011 has to be Bourjois Compact Powder.

5. Best Concealer
I hardly use concealer. It's strictly meant for events where I know there are going to be as many photographs as people (read : weddings & fancy parties). Because of this, I have never felt the need to go looking at what concealers are available out there. I have bought 3 concealers in my life time and this product was hands down the best of the other two, not that there is much competition. The Body Shop's Concealer Pencil is the Best Concealer for me this year because it is super easy to use, blends well and has Marula Oil & Beeswax to keep skin soft, supple, smooth and protected. After using this one, I don't think I will ever feel the need to try a fourth concealer.

6. Best Blush
Blush for me is a very versatile cosmetic. I use it more or less as per my requirement and also multi task with it  if need be. I have tried lots of blush this year and hoping to try more this coming year but the Best Blush of 2011 will always find a place in my make up kit. Chambor Single Blush in Soft Rose 65, is my blush discovery of this year. It's made of super fine powder which applies easily, builds and blends well. With Vitamin A & E as ingredients, you know its gotta be good for your skin. For instantly sun kissed cheeks that look great both outdoors and indoors, this blush has been my favourite all of the year gone by.

7. Best Mascara
Mascara is like a magic wand for us girl's. We can use just a swipe to make the world a better place. You see, there is nothing that the flutter of a girl's lashes can't do. To get these magical lashes, I bought a couple of mascara's this year. All of them were great and gave me desired results. However, there was this one mascara which I sub-consciously chose to use over and over again. It was L'Oreal Volume Million Lashes Mascara in Extra Black. I have fine, kind of limp lashes which can do with a generous boost of volume. This mascara has always given my the fake lashes look in a jiffy, getting the doe eyed look was never so easy!

8. Best Highlighter
Highlighters are meant to be used when you need to up your glam quotient. I personally use it only for night outings or sometimes at weddings. Highlighters when applied well can help in achieving the look of toned legs and arms. They can also be used to define or accentuate your face or torso. I have tried highlighters in powder and lotion forms but the Best Highlighter of 2011 has to be Revlon Skinlights Face Illuminator Lotion. Although I'm more into powder based cosmetics, this product with its light texture and luminous finish is fantastic when used beneath a foundation. Enriched with Vitamins A, E & C along with SPF 15 to improve and protect your skin, it is easy to apply and is oil free making the issue of break-outs, a non issue. Plus, a little product does a lot and I'm hoping that it will last me for quiet some time.

9. Best Primer
Primer is meant to be used to help in even, almost effortless application of your make up. It prepares your skin to receive the rest of the cosmetics. I was never in to the different steps and types of make up products which are used to create a flawless look. However, the beauty of writing a make up review blog is that you learn so much on the job! I did my research and then purchased my first ever skin primer this year. Presenting, The Body Shop's Vitamin C Skin Boost Serum. This product is so versatile and such a joy to use. It gives my face an immediate radiance and makes blending foundation and concealer easy. With a citrus fragrance, anti-oxidant vitamins C & E and Brazil nut oil, you get soft, silk like skin as result. I'm going to certainly keep this product on my must have list even in the years to come.

10. Best Moisturiser
Moisturiser is a daily use product which all of us are quiet familiar with. Using a moisturiser which is suitable for your skin type goes a long way in helping with keeping your skin looking young and protected. However, with the influx of new products daily in the market and so many types of creams which the advertisements convince us, we just have to use. When I saw the advertisement for Olay's Natural White All in One Day Cream it was like the God's had finally heard my prayers. This face creams does the work of four different products, namely moisturiser, sun screen, fairness and dark spots remover. With a non greasy finish and triple nutrient system (vitamin B3, pro B5 and E) this cream is instantly absorbed into your skin and hydrates it. I'm sure I need not add more lines to tell you why I chose this moisturiser as the best of the year.

11. Best Face Wash/Cleanser
Along with face creams, there is a new face wash introduced daily in the Indian market. However, with the aggressive promoting and stiff competition I was super confused which ones to try and which to skip through the year. I've tried my share but Pond's Face Washes were the top favourite this year. With an incredibly wide range of face washes (oil control, pimple care, daily cleansing, white beauty, intense moisture) which they introduced this year, Pond's definitely has its pulse on the skin needs of an Indian girl. I also picked Pond's as the Best Face wash/cleansing product of the year because they tried to make every woman realise that using a regular soap on your face is a big no. The more you educate and care for your self today, the better you will look tomorrow. Thank you Pond's, you may now take a bow!

12. Best Fitness Trend
I hope you have earned whatever you ate this year. No, this statement does not refer to your careers and professions. It refers to the hard work and dedication you have put into keeping your body fit and healthy through the year. Your body is like a vehicle, do not over fuel it, if it won't be travelling the distance or you will face a spillage. Similarly, how long can a car drive on an empty tank? Diet and Physical activity go hand in hand to make a fitter you. Hence, the biggest fitness trend of 2011 had to be the growing awareness and emphasis on "healthy eating with exercise". Everyone from the celebs to your next door neighbour is having "5 small meals at regular intervals" these days. Yoga, pilates, strength training, martial arts, plyometrics, belly dancing etc. have taken over, to make your work outs more enjoyable yet result oriented than the conventional forms of exercising. A fit and toned body is much appreciated and desired over being plain skinny. So what if you did not give much thought to fitness in the last year, its never too late to start and set your own fitness trends for the coming year...

Merry Christmas to all my fabulous Girl's out there!! It's the season to rejoice and celebrate, it's that time of the year when looking gorgeous is absolutely necessary. Price : INR 75

Quantity : 8 ml.

Available at : All Maybeline kiosks

Maybelline Colorama Nail Enamel comes in glass bottles with an applicator brush attached to the cap of the bottle. The brush is excellent for application and in my opinion is as good as some expensive nail paints available in the market. The color range offered by Maybelline Colorama is extensive and the color payout, especially with a double coat is outstanding. However, this nail paint tends to chips easily, especially on my fingers. By easily I mean, sometimes in a day itself! But it could also be just me, thanks to my compulsive hand washing habit.

Application :
With one sweep, paint the first line of nail polish up the center of your nail starting from the base to the tip. For the cleanest look, be sure to leave a small space at the base of the nail. Then apply color to the rest of the nail with additional sweeps of polish on each side of the original line. Let your nails dry before applying a second coat.

Pro's of Maybelline Colorama Nail Enamel :
  • Inexpensive
  • Easily available at all Maybelline counters
  • Extensive range of colors to choose from
  • Ease in application, thanks to the accompanying brush
  • Excellent color payout
Con's of Maybelline Colorama Nail Enamel :
  • With constant exposure to water, nail paint chips easily
To Splurge or Not to Splurge :
Maybelline Colorama Nail Enamel is a must have for all Girl's who are hooked to nail paints. Also, with the festivities and year end bashes, having a couple of these will make last minute stressing over your tips and toes  a thing of past. Grab a couple of these and remember to keep your hands dry as much as possible till the festivities wind up.

Final Verdict :
Maybelline Colorama Nail Enamel gets a 4/5 from me!

Ponds White Beauty Naturals Spot-less Lightening Cream

Heyyy Girls!!!
Reviewing today the new face cream by one of the oldest and trusted brands available in India, Pond's. It's their newest cream in addition to the already existing, White Beauty range of lightening creams. Only difference being, this one has natural ingredients.

Reviewing today, Pond's White Beauty Naturals Spot-less Lightening Cream.

Pond's says :
"The Power of Camellia Leaf
Of the estimated 250,000 species of plants known to humankind, we discovered that one of the plants with remarkable skin lightening qualities is the Camellia leaf. This precious species, with rich natural polyphenols and antioxidants, is known to reduce the production of melanin from the source. Helps in lightening skin and reducing dark spots at the source to give you long lasting spot-less skin.
New Pond's White Beauty Naturals Spot-Less Lightening Cream, containing the extraordinary Camellia Leaf extract, is specially formulated to lighten skin and reduce dark spots."

 Price : INR 75

Quantity : 25 gms.

Available at : All leading departmental stores & general stores

The cream comes packed in a paper carton, with a plastic tub inside. The tub is see through but appears white in color due to the cream inside and has a green cap. The carton is also all green and silver with the Camellia Leaf all over it. Coming to the cream, it is white in color with a nice, herbal kind of fragrance. I simply loved this cream on my face which is the story with most other Pond's products I have used. The cream is pretty heavy in texture, making it moisturising, for even dry skin.

Application :
For visibly lighter, long lasting spot-less skin, use every morning and evening after cleansing your skin. Smooth skin over entire face and neck with your fingertips.

Pro's of Ponds White Beauty Naturals Spot-less Lightening Cream :
  • Affordable Price
  • Nice looking packaging which is also travel safe
  • Has a great fragrance, reason enough to use it many times a day
  • Quickly absorbs into skin
  • Leaves skin feeling soft after application
  • With regular use, skin is left looking brighter
Con's of Ponds White Beauty Naturals Spot-less Lightening Cream :
  • Leaves skin with a whitish film after use, maybe this is Pond's way of giving immediate results to impatient users but I'm not sure if every one would be fond of it
  • Has no sun protection or UV barriers
To Splurge Or Not To Splurge :
Ponds White Beauty Naturals Spot-less Lightening Cream is a nice smelling, moisturising cream with Camellia leaf extracts that are proven to prevent spots and improve your skin tone. I have used this skin during the winters and its pretty good as a cold cream too. However, the white film after using this cream and lack of sun protection which is pretty common in almost all face cream these days, is a bit of a downer in this product. Try this one if you have been using Pond's White Beauty products and would like to give this one a shot too.

Final Verdict :
Ponds White Beauty Naturals Spot-less Lightening Cream gets a 3/5 from me!

L'Oreal Elvive Re-Nutrition Nourishing Cream Conditioner

Heyyy Girls!!!
My hair is in desperate need of some intervention and TLC. Fried using heated tools with alarming regularity and not to forget my big time addiction to hair colors, I keep scouting the market for new products which along with my existing staple, can help keep my hair looking and feeling healthy.

Today's review is for a cream conditioner I stumbled on one such product hunt. Reviewing today, L'Oreal Elvive Re-Nutrition Nourishing Cream Conditioner.

L'Oreal says :
"Dry hair? L’OrĂ©al Paris introduces the latest solution to nourish and revive dry hair. New Elvive Re-Nutrition, an exclusive range combining L'Oreal's latest conditioning technology with an extract derived from nature; Royal Jelly.
Royal Jelly is an extract derived from nature and has been widely recognised as a ‘cure-all’ for many centuries. Ancient civilisations such as the Egyptians and Romans recognised the healing benefits of bee by-products.
Dry hair suffers from weakened hair fibres, a dull appearance, low natural shine and can be hard to manage. With Re-Nutrition Caring Cream Conditioner, bounce and suppleness is instantly regained and detangled hair looks revitalised and silky soft to touch."

Price : INR 450 (approximately)

Quantity : 400 ml.

Available at : Stores which stock imported beauty products or Beauty supply stores
L'Oreal Elvive Re-Nutrition Nourishing Cream Conditioner comes in a plastic bottle which is shaped like a tube. The conditioner is dispensed in to your hands directly from the bottle through the bottle opening. With a flip top cap, this conditioner bottle is far from ideal for travelling with. But if you must, make sure you tape it closed, while to and fro. The conditioner is a light yellow in colour and pretty thick in consistency. Looks quiet like custard to me! The fragrance of this conditioner is pretty yummy too, not surprising given it has Royal Jelly has an ingredient in it.

After shampooing work this Re-Nutrition Cream Conditioner through the lengths of the hair and then rinse.
L'Oreal Elvive Re-Nutrition Nourishing Cream Conditioner applied on hair

Maybelline Express Finish 40/50 Second Nail Color

Heyyy Girls!!!

However, this week I've outdone myself. I have changed 4 nail paint in a week! Yes, co-ordinating outfits with your make up is a big deal in Indian weddings and hence I've been trying to cope up as well.

Today I'm reviewing Maybelline's Express Finish Nail Color which dries up in 40/50 seconds flat to make sure you save up on time while still looking like a diva.

Maybelline says :
"Quick-dry nail color – Wet to Set in 50 Seconds. Advanced Wear® anti-chip color gives tips a fresh, vivid look and lasts for days. Exclusive Control-Flow™ brush dispenses the exact amount of color for a smooth, even application that resists chipping and peeling."

Quantity : 14.7 ml. (50 seconds) / 10 ml. (40 seconds)

Available at : All Maybelline kiosks

Express Finish Nail Color comes in a glass bottle with a screw cap. The brush is excellent and given ease in application. The color pigments are bold and a single coat is also effective in delivering the desired color to your nails. However, if you are aiming for the exact same color as in the bottle and a 3-4 days long wear, you must apply a second coat. During application, the nail paint smells strong like most other paints do but once dried, the smell ceases.

First apply a clear base coat to prevent your nails from yellowing and to help your nail color last longer. With one sweep, paint the first line of nail polish up the center of your nail starting from the base to the tip. For the cleanest look, be sure to leave a small space at the base of the nail. Then apply color to the rest of the nail.

  • When applied as a double coat, lasts for 3-4 days depending on how much you expose your hands to water

  • After a couple of uses, nail paint gets thick and needs to be diluted with a thinner
  • Single coat of nail paint will chip easily
To Splurge or Not to Splurge :
If you love nail paint but hate the wait while it dries, this is the perfect product for you. I love this nail paint and plan to buy as many shades as I can find. Definite splurge for all nails obsessed girls.
